    FIRE MARKS
FA Hydrant, UF Steamer & Mutual Tree
    PLAQUE/SIGN
    Fire Association of Philadelphia
In 1817, several of the volunteer fire companies in Philadelphia formed the Fire Association. The mark shows an old fire plug with a length of hose and the initials of the Association on either side. The Fire Association later became Reliance Insurance Company, which filed for bankruptcy in 2000, ending a 183 year history.
    United Firemen's Insurance Company
The United Firemen's Insurance Company of Philadelphia was incorporated in 1860 by a group of 28 fire and hose companies, many of which were the first purchasers of the new steam engine. They decided to use the steam engine on their marks.
    Mutual Assurance
Benjamin Franklin, who founded the Philadelphia Contributionship, strongly believed that trees next to a house would attract lightning and thereby increase the risk of fire. Mutual Assurance of Philadelphia was founded in 1784 by 40 members of the Contributionship who didn't believe it was a problem to insure buildings surrounded by trees. Their mark bears a tree on it to reflect the willingness to cover these buildings.
Each of these Marks is approximately 2.0" X 3.0" and is cast on a oblong plaque measuring approximately 8.0"X 5.75". The plaque is red with the marks and lettering in a dark antique gold color and was cast by Cast Craft.
A must for any Firefighter, or Insurance Memorabilia Collector
American insurance company’s fire marks were placed on the exterior of a house and were intended to discourage malicious arson by showing that the owner would not suffer greatly if the building was destroyed. Additionally, the mark stood as a guarantee to fire brigades that the insurance company which insured the house in question would reward handsomely the brigade extinguishing a blaze on the premises.
