Mercruiser Gimbal Ring Steering Shaft Plug Kit Gimble
These are to access and replace the gimbal ring or steering shaft without pulling the engine.
This is for Alpha One Generation One, Alpha One Generation Two Bravo MC1, IR, MR, MC-TR and TRS. This is part number Quick Silver 22- 88847A 1.
Now for the how to, part of this. Pull
outdrive
and bell housing. Then removed the cotter key on bottom of gimbal plate and you may have to heat it up the bottom pin with a torch and drive the pin out (the pin on the bottom has a slot this is not for a screwdriver it is for alignment). Then Using the template that comes with this kit. Drill 2 holes in the top part of the gimbal plate with a 1 inch hole saw drill. Using a hammer and a screwdriver tap the nut free on the top of the steering .And you can also remove the bolt that goes through the steering arm. Now these older gimbal ring steering shafts don’t want to fall apart so if you are replacing the old gimbal ring you can cut it in half with a saws all and removed the bottom half, This allows you to continue tapping the nut through the pre drilled holes until the top part of the gimbal ring and the steering shaft should fall out. While it was out I used a pipe thread tap 1 inch and threaded the holes drilled into the top of the gimbal plate and cleaned up all the metal shavings. Putting it back together is a breeze, everything just fits. It
doesn't
hurt to do an outdrive alignment.
The replacement nut is grooved so that you can get it good and tight.
